Plumbing today is a varied and skilled occupation. Careers in the
Plumbing Industry range through occupations
such as gas, roof plumbing,
mechanical services, drainage and sheetmetal, to name a few.
The joint policy for funding of Group Training Companies was first
established in 1981. At the time its aim was to increase the number of
apprenticeships available, especially in small business, and to improve the
quality of training for those apprentices.

The plumbing
industry has recognised a need to establish an independent
"Plumbing Industry" group training organisation. Recent
extensive market research has shown that many organisations in the
plumbing industry perceive there are numerous advantages to this
concept, and identified overwhelming support for it. There is an acute
need to increase both the quality and quantity of trained apprentices
in the industry. TAPS has been born out of this need to supply the
Plumbing Industry with skilled and trained apprentices/trainees.
